Four string electric bass guitar ZR Hera - description

When I designed this instrument I put the accent on material quality and simplified construction. All metal components are custom made to harmonize their shapes and sizes with wooden parts of the guitar body. None of the components disturbs nice wooden surface. Brass tailpiece block is hidden under the wallnut top. Four independent cylinders are inset into the surface and they support each string individually. It provides maximal separation of strings and prevent vibration transfer between them. Bridge cylinders and nut are made of high quality bronze. This material is harder than brass but still well workable. It has a perfect sound characteristic. The only disadvantage of this solution are dificulties when changing type of strings or tunning. It requires more work to set the strings in tune on all frets. There has been used Syntoms special bronze frets to match quality of the bridge and nut. D'Addario EXPR steel strings are copper coated. Brightly sounding character of steel core is slightly change by the copper coat to give a bit more of acoustic character to the final sound.

This bass guitar has a neck through body. Neck is made from two pieces of straight-grained American ash. European ash was used for body. There are two large cavities on both side of body covered by beatifull american wallnut top. There is only a small round plate on the back side to access one cavity for wiring. A guitar body is quiet thick (56mm) and large to produce more wood responds to string vibration. Weight has been reduced by cavities and light Schaller BM tunners. ZR Hera Bass guitar is well ballanced on the strap by body extension. Ebony fingerboard is easily accessible along the whole length. Neck has a rounded C profile on the nut side and a bit more flatten shape on the body side. Two carbon rods has been used to support neck.

There is a set of Seymour Duncan NYC bass pickups installed without trims. These are humbucker style pickups with four conductors to allow variety of connections. Wires are connected to modern Freeway switch with 6 positions. Three positions connect both coils in normal series mode and three positions connect only one coil of each pickup. Outgoing sound is controlled by a large knob on 250k volume potentiometer with pull up kill switch. There is a smaller copper knob on the linear 250k potentiometer also fitted with a push/pull switch. Tonal character can be modified by two different capacitor values connected to the the switch.

Overall this bass guitar has a unique character. It sounds clearly and warmly with lot of harmonics. Natural sound sustain without amplification is audiable up to 40 seconds. Even the small number of electric circuit controllers visible on the surface provide a lot of options. I named this instrument after the Greek goddess Hera and to pay a tribute to my friends from HERA Rock, Prachatice.
